The Terrifying Troupe (by sandy honig)
Count Olaf and his theatre troupe. I was disguised as a commercial photographer to investigate these wicked people, pretending I was interested in their dreadful plays. From left to right: the volatile white-faced ladies, the dreadful bald man, the ridiculous and evil Count Olaf, the bloodthirsty hook-handed man, and Esmé Squalor, the city’s sixth most important financial advisor, as well as Count Olaf’s girlfriend.

sandy is magic. also, look at my “bitch” stare on the far left corner.

march 17, 2012: a diary post (2/2)

content and very much full from the food, we left cafe lalo and walked in the direction of central park. it was 60+ degrees and gorgeous outside in new york city today - perfect park weather! because he had spent so long in the cafe, our trek through the park coincided conveniently with ~golden hour~ and many picture opportunities. we all took turns photographing each other in front of some pretty stream of light, bush/flowers, or tree. you name it, we probably took pictures of it. we managed to make a 15 minute walk through the park take over an hour; so goes the lives of girls with cameras.

we spent the longest amount of time in front of a tree with white flowers where I shot most of my film frames and stuck a flower in my hair because I’m a walking cliche. I even managed to snap a few shots of an adorable little girl standing right around the trunk, aware of my camera and kind of posing for me! I approached her and asked if I could take her picture and she said yes - in short, I’m really excited to develop the pictures I took yesterday/today.

after the not-so-brief excursion through the park and celebration of spring, we were nearly at the final stop on today’s agenda: the guggenheim! we got there during the window of time with “suggested donation” - convenient for students tight on money like us. I’m terrible because before today, I had actually never been to the guggenheim. never been able to marvel at its insane architecture and design. so that I did, in plentiful quantities. the guggenheim is a marvelous museum and the structure itself is worth seeing, let alone the amazing art it houses. we were mainly drawn to the francesca woodman exhibit that opened just yesterday so after picture-taking, we headed in that direction.

francesca woodman’s story is tragic (she committed suicide at age 22) but her collection of work is awe-inspiring, indescribable, groundbreaking for its time. I was extremely surprised by the extent of prints on display but pleasantly so. the three of us took our time viewing her work, most of which focus on femininity and nudity often juxtaposed with deteriorating interiors or simple parts of nature. I felt a sadness in and around a lot of the pictures because of the story of the artist that surrounded them, but appreciated and was inspired by their content regardless. it was an amazing body of pictures, an exhibit worth seeing for sure.

by 7 pm, we were exhausted from our long, jam-packed day. so we took the subway and headed home, agreeably happy all around. yay! the end :)
